Electronic Cigarettes Vs. Tobacco

Most people tell you they would quit smoking tobacco if they had the will power but don't believe them.

They need their fix. They crave that little slender tube between their fingers for daily support and the brief surcease from life that comes with that first morning drag on a cigarette. And so the dilemma rages on.

Well fortunately now there is a remedy for this; and it's called the Electronic Cigarette. If you've never heard of an electronic cigarette you're not alone. I live in a smaller town on the East Coast and most people look at me like I have two heads when I try explaining what an electronic (or electric) cigarette is - and although there are days that I feel like I have two heads, I really don't.

An alternative to smoked tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, electronic cigarettes are smokeless; th ey instead produce a vapor. In addition to nicotine delivery, this vapor also provides a flavor and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke. However, NO tobacco, smoke, or combustion is actually involved in the operation of an electric (electronic) cigarette.

An electronic or electric cigarette is usually shaped like an elongated tube. The long part of the tube is a rechargeable battery. The shorter part, or the "butt", is a disposable or refillable cartridge, where the nicotine is held in liquid form until it is super heated by the battery as you "drag" on the cigarette. The liquid is then turned into a vapor which the user inhales and expels just like a regular cigarette smoker would.

Most electronic cigarettes have been designed to resemble real smoking products, like cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. The best thing about electronic cigarettes is that they don't smell bad. In fact, some of them do not smell at all. And if they do, it's a pleasant aroma, not the stifling smell of a lit cigarette. If you read through the list, most of the ingredients are commonly known, perfectly safe and included in a lot of the dietary devices we digest regularly. Now, Propylene Glycol is a different story. But thankfully it sounds more harmful than it is. In fact, it is an FDA approved food additive, so don't be discouraged by the mention of it. Propylene glycol, also called 1,2-propanediol or propane-1,2-diol, is an organic compound (a diol or double alcohol) with formula C3H8O2 or HO-CH2-CHOH-CH3 which is a colorless, mostly odorless, viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste. It's used in toothpaste, foods, and many other ingestible products.

So there you have it. I have never been a smoker of tobacco, aside from second-hand smoke, but I do occasionally like to take a few "vapes" from the aforementionedelectronic cigarette. Apart from the debate about the differences between tobacco and an electronic cigarette , comes the FDA battle and debate over regulations and "safety". (As if tobacco was ever safe!) But we'll follow up with that another time.
